Josephine Marie Kupstas, age 87 of Portage, MI died Monday, Aug. 3, 2020 after a brief illness. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on June 25, 1933 the daughter of Plachido and Vincenza (Sylvestra) DeCarlo. She was a 1952 graduate of Luzerne High School in Luzerne, PA. She was married to Thomas Joseph Kupstas on April 30, 1955 in Kingston, PA. She was a regional Sales Manager for Avon Products before becoming an Administrative Assistant for AT&T while residing in Mendham, NJ. She and her husband retired to Summerville, SC in 1998. He passed away in 2013.
Josephine was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mendham, NJ, and St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church in Summerville, SC, where she was an active member of the Women's Guild and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. While residing in Michigan for the past year, she attended St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Vicksburg, MI. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, and outdoor activities. She was a great hostess, and always wanted everyone in her presence to be comfortable and happy.
Josephine is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Emmet) Ramsay of Winston-Salem, NC, Jane (David) Guido of Vicksburg; a son, Thomas (Lori) Kupstas, Jr. of Bunnell, FL; three grandchildren, Thomas Ramsay, Matthew (Lyndsey) Ramsay, and Katherine (Matthew) Montgomery; two great-grandchildren, Jensen Ramsay and David Montgomery; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas; granddaughter, Danielle Ramsay; two brothers, Pat and Angelo DeCarlo; and a sister, Sandra Bennington.
The family will receive friends from 11 am to noon Monday, Aug. 10, 2020 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Vicksburg. The funeral mass will begin at 12 noon Monday at the church with Msgr. Thomas Martin officiating. A memorial mass will also be held 9 am Friday, August 21, 2020 at St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church in Summerville, SC with Msgr. Edward Lofton officiating. A private interment of ashes will follow. It is suggested that memorial contributions be directed to either St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 5855 East W Ave., P.O. Box 264, Vicksburg, MI 49097, or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 100, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
