Obituary

Dennis "Oz" Komarck, age 83 of Mendon, passed away unexpectedly at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo on April 27, 2024.  He was born in Battle Creek on April 27, 1941 the son of John and Mary Ann (Smith) Komarck.  Oz attended high school at Battle Creek Central, during that time he was also a volunteer ambulance driver.  On July 20, 1967 he would marry the love of his life, Jan Partak.  Oz was a member of the Portage Fire Department for nearly 40 years.  During that time, he acted as Captain, Fire Marshal, and Lead Arson Program Investigator.  His fellow fireman nicknamed him "Grub", due to the situations he always put himself in and being completely covered in dirt and soot.  Fighting fires wasn't Oz's only passion, helping others was very important to him.  He would often volunteer his time and help children at the Great Lakes Burn Camp. Oz also assisted many local funeral homes as part time help, and was a beloved employee at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon.  Oz enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children, and took many trips to Wisconsin to do so.  He had many toys in his barn, ranging from old firetrucks to old limos.  Oz was known for dad jokes, loving dogs, and always searching for a snack to steal.  Most importantly, he loved his family and his close friends.  He lived life his own way, and made sure to help everyone around him.

Oz is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jan; 6 children; Paul (Tami) Komarck, Christine (Poppy) Komarck, Jeffery (Linda) Komarck, Alice (Brandy) Shaw, Lisa (Blake) Adrian, and Charles (Michelle) Komarck; 6 grandchildren; Ashley Craft, Lindsey Schelfo, Heather Bennett, Hunter Komarck, Hayden Komarck, and Tyler Komarck; 6 great-grandchildren; and sister Joanne.  Oz was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Gordon and John.

In keeping with family wishes, cremation is being conducted.  Visitation for Oz will take place at St. Edward Catholic Church (332 W State Street, Mendon, MI 49072) on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 10am until 11am, with mass beginning at 11am with Msgr Thomas Martin officiating.  It is suggested that memorials made in Oz's name, be directed to Great Lakes Burn Camp.  Memories and condolences may be expressed to his family at eickhofffuneralhome.com
